Regional tennis: Huron, Pioneer and Skyline all net trip to state finals


The tennis Regional last week in Plymouth was fit to be tied. Huron and Pioneer tied for first place with 22 points as the River Rats dominated the singles events while Pioneer won all four doubles events. Skyline and Saline also tied – for third place – as both teams racked up 18 points.

All four teams qualified for the state finals on June 1-2 at the Greater Midland Tennis Center.

Plymouth was fifth (12), Salem sixth (6) and Bedford seventh (4) in the 10-team Regional.

At one singles, Huron freshman Angie Zhou defeated Plymouth’s Jessica Braun 6-3, 6-4.  Pioneer’s Margaret Goldberg was third.

At two singles, Huron junior Miriam Gandham defeated Skyline’s Caroline Norton 6-4, 6-2. Pioneer’s Nikita Abbaraju was third.

At three singles, Skyline senior Caroline Courtright defeated Huron’s Katie Sesi 6-4, 6-4.

At four singles, Huron senior Leila Cheung defeated Saline’s Jenny Wolf 6-0, 6-0. Pioneer’s Madeline Lee and Skyline’s Sopia Rosewarne tied for third.

At one doubles, Pioneer’s Sophie Alphonso and Hadley Huffman defeated Skyline’s Sejal Gunaratnam and Christie Charpie 6-1, 6-3. Skyline’s Sejal Gunaratnam and Christie Charpie took third.

At two doubles, Pioneer’s Gina Liu and Riley Dickinson defeated Saline 6-0, 6-1. Huron’s Carmen Giger and Cindy Lui finished third.

At three doubles, Pioneer’s Sarr Negrin and Mary Grobosky defeated Skyline’s Gabi Teodoru and Natalie Keating 6-4, 6-4.

At four doubles, Pioneer’s Kristine Zhou and Avani Shingari defeated Saline 6-2, 6-5. Huron’s Alex Kukucka and Juan Oh took third.
