Fireworks: Hudson Mills This Weekend And Your Own Over The 4th

Hudson Mills Metropark will be hosting their annual Fourth of July fireworks celebration this Saturday, June 30. Vendors will be on site and opening at 5:00 pm. Music starts at 7:00 pm. The fireworks begin at 10:00 pm.

The 4th of July means fireworks, and here are a few things to keep in mind if you will be setting off your own. The Michigan Fireworks Safety Act of 2011 tells us that in the State of Michigan,

  • Fireworks cannot be set off on public property, school property, church property, or the property of another person without that organization’s or person’s permission.
  • Fireworks cannot be sold to a minor.
  • It is illegal for a person under the influence of alcohol or drugs to use fireworks.
  • In Michigan, you can fire your consumer fireworks the day before the national holiday, the holiday, and the day after between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and midnight.

Fireworks: some people like them, some don’t. The City of Dexter makes this request to residents:

“We are trying to encourage all residents to cooperate with their neighbors so that we minimize conflicts and complaints.   We would like to request that residents be respectful of their neighbors when using fireworks on the state approved days. If you are using fireworks and a neighbor asks you to stop or is concerned about debris or the proximity to their home, we expect our residents to be cooperative neighbors and honor the request.”

The city reports that the most common complaint regarding fireworks is the noise. The State’s fireworks law however supersedes local noise ordinances, but only during the 8 a.m. to midnight permissible hours of use.

The Hudson Mills fireworks will be conducted by Wolverine Fireworks Display, Inc. and will use a total of 758 shells in the show (keeping in mind a single firework is often a cluster of shells).

It is a popular event so get to the park early. Parking on the streets is prohibited. Have plenty to drink. The forecast calls for clear skies Saturday with a high of 93 degrees and a low of 75.

Have a happy and safe Fourth of July.
