Celebrating 50 years: Swisher Commercial built on building relationships


Swisher Commercial opened in 1968 and is celebrating 50 years in Ann Arbor. There are many reasons for success in a competitive business like commercial real estate and Swisher has been doing plenty right to last 50 years – and counting. But the best way to understand why a company succeeds is to hear from one of their clients.

Eugene Brown is one such former client and he pretty much sums up why Swisher has been making deals for five decades.

“I have had a long and gratifying relationship with Dave Hamilton and Swisher Commercial,” Brown says in a testimonial on the Swisher web site. “I was growing my consulting/training business in the 90’s and was doing quite well. My wife and I started our business in our home and after about a year I rented an office space. When I needed more space, Dave Hamilton acted on my behalf to purchase the property. His knowledge and insight were very valuable. I reached a point where I needed to sell the property and again Dave was the guy that made it happen. It was the beginning of tough times for selling real estate. Dave very masterfully engineered the deal. Without him, the property might not have ever sold.

“At that time, I also had a house that I wanted to rent out and try to hold off losses of letting it sit empty. Dave rose to the occasion and managed the rental of my property. He handled the rentals for about three years until the house finally sold. I would go to Dave Hamilton and Swisher Commercial in a heartbeat for anything that deals with real estate buying and selling. A great group of folks to deal with.”

Michael L. Jurgenson (CCIM), the president/managing broker for Swisher, says success comes from relationships. It’s not about the deal, but the relationship that is formed during the deal that has given Swisher a road map to success.

“We recognize that our clients’ success is the measure of our own success,” Jurgenson said. “We have well established, trusting relationships with clients and with lending institutions, governmental agencies and service firms.

“What we excel at the most is building relationships. Commercial real estate is our business but relationships is our priority. That’s been a constant through the history of the company. Our clients are the most important thing to us and it’s about establishing and maintaining relationships and I think it’s something we’ve been able to do for a long time.”

It’s also about good people doing good work.

“What’s important to survive is to have good people,” says Jurgenson. “Swisher has been fortunate to have a long list of good leadership and good people that have been here over the years. It all started with John Swisher Jr., who felt that the company needed to have both good people and strong principles. And from the start he emphasized honesty, trust and respect. These were the core principles he started the company with and I think those have carried over to today.”

Because of their success and how they go about doing business, brokers and agents sign up for the long-term with Swisher.  Swisher has a total of 17 team members with an average time of 15 years with the company.

“That speaks to the environment we have here and I think that’s kind of special,” Jurgenson said. “It’s an environment that allows our associates and staff to thrive and get along and be successful together.”

Jurgenson became president of the company at the beginning of this year after five years with Swisher previous to his promotion. He grew up in the Ann Arbor area and graduated from the University of Michigan before helping run a brokerage company in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan.

For many years, Swisher agents have played an active role in civic affairs, professional associations, and charitable organizations. The perspective and insight gained from this involvement has been invaluable in providing the highest quality counsel to clients and has earned the respect and recognition of the community at large.

While Swisher celebrates 50 years of past success, Jurgenson is equally as excited about the future.

“We will continue to grow with the market,” he said. “The market and industry are constantly changing and we make it a point to stay up with the latest trends. We plan on being a significant player now and into the future.”
