Football preview: River Rats have the confidence to end losing streak

Huron football coach Broderick Smith saw improvement during the season last year in his first year coaching the varsity team. He also saw a team that never gave up and fought until the end – good qualities for a program chasing their first victory in a long time.

Last year was the River Rats’ third consecutive 0-9 season and first for Smith, who moved up from the JV team last season. Smith has an enthusiasm and passion for the game of football that certainly rubs off on his players.

In other words, the River Rats are headed in the right direction and Smith hopes this is the year that direction lands in the win column at least a few times. This year’s team has been working hard in the off-season and that work ethic has helped create a team that believes in themselves.

The River Rats lost some talented seniors off last year’s team but there are some strong players coming back for 2018. The running game should be a team strength with both Aaron Winston and Mayco Hall back to help carry the load. Leading the way up front blocking will be offensive lineman Alexander Duhr.

On the other side of the ball, linebacker Tyree Hill returns to the starting lineup for the River Rats.

Cameron Donell is back and will take over the starting quarterback duties for Huron. “Cameron will be the starter,” Smith says. “He has good speed and a live arm. He’s young and still learning and improving. He started week nine last fall as a sophomore and ran for over 100 yards.”

Ricardo Mojica is new this season and will play up front on the defensive line.

There seems to be plenty of talent lining up for the River Rats. But can they take that talent all the way to the house – and the win column?

“Our strength is believing in each other,” Smith said. “Our numbers are down a little bit from last year but I think most teams are seeing lower turnouts. But the kids have more confidence in their ability to compete. We need to stay healthy and keep the same energy we have had all off-season.”
