JDRF One Walk Ann Arbor for Type 1 Diabetes Research is Sept. 23 in Dexter

More than 3,000 people will gather at Hudson Mills Metropark in Dexter to participate in the annual JDRF One Walk on Sunday, Sept. 23. The annual Walk, organized by the JDRF Metro Detroit Chapter, raises money to fund critically-needed type 1 diabetes (T1D) research.

“We are grateful for the incredible support of community and business leaders here in Ann Arbor,” said Nikki Borgess, Executive Director of the JDRF Metro Detroit Chapter. “The dollars raised at this year’s event will lead to better lives for the 1.25 million Americans with type 1 diabetes, and will help us realize our vision of a world without T1D.”

Walkers can walk the three mile route at Hudson Mills Metropark, but many people choose to not walk and enjoy the event festivities. Registration and check-in begins at 8:30 am. The event will have food, bounce houses, a rock climbing wall, information about Type 1 diabetes, and more.

Each year, approximately 200 local JDRF One Walks all around the United States bring together hundreds of thousands of people who share JDRF’s mission to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat T1D and its complications. JDRF One Walk is JDRF’s flagship fundraising event and the most powerful peer-to-peer fundraising program in the world for T1D. Since 1992, the event has raised more than $1 billion dollars for life-changing T1D research, leading to breakthrough discoveries, many of which have moved into clinical trials and real-world testing.

Although there has been considerable progress, JDRF will continue to drive scientific advances, delivering new treatments and therapies that make day-to-day life with T1D easier, safer and healthier until there is a cure.
The JDRF Metro Detroit Chapter gratefully acknowledges its corporate partners: McKinley, Brasscraft Manufacturing, Douglas J, Lions Club International, Team Schostak, Absopure, Delta Dental, Meijer, Kunz, Leigh & Associates, and HAP.

About T1D
Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables people to get energy from food. It occurs when the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, called beta cells. While its causes are not yet entirely understood, scientists believe that both genetic factors and environmental triggers are involved. Its onset has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. There is nothing you can do to prevent T1D, and—at present—nothing you can do to get rid of it.

About JDRF
JDRF is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. Our mission is to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat T1D and its complications. To accomplish this, JDRF has invested more than $2 billion in research funding since our inception.

We are an organization built on a grassroots model of people connecting in their local communities, collaborating regionally for efficiency and broader fundraising impact, and uniting on a national stage to pool resources, passion, and energy. We collaborate with academic institutions, policymakers, and corporate and industry partners to develop and deliver a pipeline of innovative therapies to people living with T1D. Our staff and volunteers throughout the United States and our six international affiliates are dedicated to advocacy, community engagement and our vision of a world without T1D.
