Season Preview: Huron field hockey ready to take shot at state repeat

The Ann Arbor Huron field hockey team can’t top what last year’s team accomplished – they can only hope to equal it. Last season’s River Rats went 18-0-1 and scored a 2-1 victory over Dexter in the State Finals for the school’s first D-1 title since 2013.

Undefeated season. State title. The pinnacle of field hockey.

And don’t think for one second that repeating isn’t on the table at Huron. With the lineup they have back, the confidence they gained and the experience on the field, the River Rats are focused on repeating last season’s magical year.

“We have a lot of experience,” says Huron Coach Lauren Hall. “The key for us is avoiding injuries.”

Top returners include four All-State First Team seniors: Minna Tremonti, Megan Sabb, Allison Sabb (the team’s leading scorer) and Anna Scott. Also back are seniors Samantha Cho (All State Honorable Mention), Jackie Mortell, Afua NKansah-Andoh and goalie Lee Stewart.

The River Rats lineup also will include junior Stephanie McCurrach and sophomores Liz Guenther and Charlotte Hauptman.

The River Rats opened the season on Aug. 23 with an 8-0 win over East Grand Rapids.

Huron will host rival and state-power Pioneer at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday (Aug. 30). Dexter defeated Pioneer in last year’s semifinal game to end the Pioneers’ run at a fourth straight state title.
