Soccer: Pioneer’s quick start leads to 4-1 win over Monroe

After a positive outcome in a scoreless draw with talented Skyline last Thursday, the Pioneer soccer team built on their growing confidence to bounce visiting Monroe 4-1 on Tuesday in an SEC Red Division matchup.

The Pioneers built a quick 4-0 lead and never looked back.

Josh Martins-Caulfield, James Simon, Brendan Novar and Daniel Gutenberg all scored goals for the Pioneers. Ali Houmani had two assists in the win.

“We are continuing to grow and come together as a team,” said Coach Jon Sundermann. “I thought the boys responded well to an emotional game against a very tough Skyline team with a couple of very efficient and focused practices.”

That preparation paid off against the Trojans.

“They came out and showed that they are ready to continue to move forward by starting very strong agasint a tenacious Monroe squad,” Sundermann said. “We were fortunate to get up early and therefore had the opportunity to move players around to distribute minutes and build experience. That game experience is invaluable as it will continue to build depth and confidence throughout the roster as we progress through the season and look to build a program of sustained excellence.”

The Pioneers look to continue to roll on Thursday night against what is expected to be a very good Rochester Adams team. The game is at 7 p.m. at Rochester Adams.
