School is Back in Session: Safety First, No Exceptions

School is back in session.

That may be good news or bad news for different people, but one thing we can all get on the same page with is school safety.  Lots of kids are out and about in the mornings and afternoons.

Take into consideration the new traffic patterns with a couple of roundabouts, a new turn lane on Dan Hoey Rd, and lots of fresh and fast pavement, and motorists will need to be especially alert as drivers and pedestrians alike learn how to negotiate the new infrastructure.

AAA gives us some somber statistics:

  • 25,000 children get hurt going to school every single year.
  • 100 children are killed every year walking to and from school.
  • Accidents are most likely to happen between 6am-7am and 3pm-4pm.

Law enforcement will make their presence known in an effort to get motorists to pay attention to their speed and the immediate environment.  The best advice is for motorists to be aware of traffic and pedestrian activity, be patient, allow yourself extra time for your commute, and know your school’s rules for student drop-off.

Most folks probably know the rules with school buses, but it’s always a good review.
