Swimming: Pioneer pulls away from Skyline in SEC Red dual-meet


Two of the best swimming and diving teams in the area, if not the state, got together on Sept. 6 for an SEC Red Division dual meet. Host Pioneer scored an impressive 109.50-76.50 victory over defending state champion Skyline.

The Pioneer team of Quoia Sam, Edwina Jalet, Abby Mehraban and Amelia Weyhing touched first in the medley relay to get things going with a time of 1:48.63. Skyline’s foursome of Casey Chung, Emma Pettigrew, Claire Kozma and Madison Deininger finished second in 1:53.50. Pioneer’s team of Holly Pringle, Lily Cramer, Jeannie Liu and Jenni Krzeczkowski was third in 1:53.70.

Hannah Jyawook took home first-place points for Skyline in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:54.63. Pioneer took second with Katie Capelli (1:55.17), third with Lindsay Orringer-Hau (1:57.98) and fourth with Vivian VanRenterghem (2:00.40).

Skyline’s Casey Chung won the 200 IM with a time of 2:09.52. Pioneer, again, took the next three spots with Edwina Jalet second (2:12.28), Abby Mehraban third (2:14.49) and Lily Cramer fourth (2:14.59).

Allison Haak sprinted to a first-place finish for Skyline in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.79. Pioneer’s Amelia Weyhing was second (25.16) and Skyline’s Claire Kozma and Pioneer’s Jenni Krzeczkowski tied for third (25.74).

The Eagles went one-two in diving with Zain Smith first (274.25 points) and Paige Sundermann second (242.55). Pioneer’s Alex Mercier was third (201.7).

Pioneer’s Holly Pringle won the butterfly with a time of 1:01.53. Skyline’s Claire Kozma was second (1:03.14) and Pioneer’s Jeannie Liu was third (1:05.21).

Skyline’s Allison Haak returned to the winner’s circle with her first place in the 100 freestyle with a time of 53.51. Pioneer dominated the rest of the race with Amelia Weyhing second (53.75), Vivian VanRenterghem third (55.95), Autumn Bullinger fourth (56.84) and Lauren Batra fifth (59.51).

In the 500 freestyle, Skyline’s Hannah Jyawook won her second individual race of the meet with a time of 5:02.93. Pioneer’s Katie Capelli was second (5:09.08) and teammate Lindsay Orringer-Hau was third (5:15.96).

Pioneer went one-two in the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Quoia Sam, Amelia Weyhing, Jenni Krzeczkowski and Katie Capelli took first with a time of 1:41.71. Teammates Lily Cramer, Autumn Bullinger, Vivian VanRenterghem and Lindsay Orringer-Hau were second in 1:42.85. The Skyline team of Allison Haak, Sophia Kunisaki, Ella Sadler and Hannah Jyawook took third in 1:42.90.

Skyline’s Casey Chung took her second victory of the evening by touching first in the backstroke with a time of 56.36. Pioneer took second with Quoia Sam (59.76) and third with Holly Pringle (1:01.96). Skyline’s Madison Deininger was fourth in 1:05.71.

Pioneer went one-two-three in the breaststroke with Edwina Jalet first (1:07.56), Lily Cramer second (1:08.32) and Jenni Krzeczkowski third (1:11.47).

Skyline won the 400 free relay as the team of Hannah Jyawook, Allison Haak, Claire Kozma and Casey Chung touched first in 3:41.30. Pioneer’s team of Katie Capelli, Autumn Bullinger, Vivian VanRenterghem and Edwina Jalet took second in 3:47.55.
