Rep. Donna Lasinski on Latest PFAS Concerns in the Huron River:

In a series of increasing warnings regarding the Huron River, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services issued an advisory warning residents and their pets not to swallow the river’s foam as it may contain high amounts of PFAS. In response, state Rep. Donna Lasinski (D-Scio Township) issued the following statement:

“Families throughout the Great Lakes State should not have to be wary of their water, which is why I co-sponsored legislation to address PFAS contamination throughout the state. One of the greatest benefits of living in Michigan is being surrounded by fresh water. Our lakes, rivers and streams are often the focal points for our memories and experiences. Yet due to the continued inaction from legislative committee leaders in our state, these bodies of water are becoming increasingly hazardous to us all. It is time for legislators to join together in providing clean water for all Michiganders by passing our legislation.”

The Huron River has been the focus of the Department of Environmental Quality and other agencies testing to determine the extent of the contamination. Ann Arbor’s municipal water supply tested positive for PFAS in 2014. Ann Arbor draws 85% of it’s city water from the river.

The City of Dexter recently received a clean bill of health for the city’s municipal drinking water supply.
