Soccer: Dreadnaughts knock off rival Chelsea 3-1

Dexter traveled to their rival Chelsea for an intense and physical match up on Thursday and scored an impressive 3-1 over the Bulldgs.

Dexter carried much of the possession in the first half and created multiple scoring opportunities but could not find the back of the net in the first half.  Chelsea countered with two great scoring chances created by Nathan Quintana.

The second half started similar to the first with Dexter maintaining an advantage in possession until Dexter junior tri-captain Sam Harshe was fouled outside of the 18 yard box and hit a perfectly bent ball into the top left corner to give Dexter a 1-0 lead.

The game stayed tight for the next 10 minutes until Chelsea hit a free kick from just over half field that resulted in a penalty kick call for a foul against Dexter.  Chelsea converted the PK to make the game 1-1.

The Bulldogs took momentum, but not for long.

Dexter sophomore Hayden Newton did the unthinkable. On the Dexter kick-off with Chelsea still celebrating its goal, Hayden Newton shot the ball directly into the Chelsea goal to give Dexter a 2-1 lead.

With the momentum squarely back on Dexter’s side, the Dreads got the third goal with 8 minutes left in the game on a volley from Riley Cyrulnik from just outside the 18-yard box.

On Tuesday, Dexter knocked off host Lincoln 8-0.

Dexter got contributions from the whole squad and was led by Jake Avery with 3 goals, Noah Rogge with 1 goal and 1 assist, Sam Harshe with 1 goal and 2 assists, Hayden Newton with 1 goal and an assist, Matt Roller with a goal and an assist and Simone Bulante with a goal.

Assists were also recorded by Jack Kolka, Jack Evans and Grant Wagner.

Dexter hosts Ypsilanti on Tuesday and play at Adrian on Thursday.
