HS Football Week 7: Another rough outing for the local teams on the gridiron


Monroe 42, Pioneer 7 

The Pioneers were only down 7-0 at halftime but a few big plays swung the momentum and the score quickly into the Trojans’ favor as the hosts went on to a 42-7 win. Pioneer has now lost three straight after winning three in a row and starting the season 3-1.

The Trojans returned the opening kickoff of the second half for a touchdown to quickly stretch their lead to two scores. On their next possession, the Trojans fumbled but the ball but it was picked up by a Monroe player who took it in for another score. Monroe scored its third TD of the quarter on a long run.

It was that kind of night for the Pioneers.

“It was one of those everything that can go wrong does type of games,” said Pioneer Coach Bill Bellers.

Monroe has won four straight and improved to 6-1 on the season, already locking up a playoff spot. They face Saline next week in a game that could decide the SEC Red Division crown.

Bedford 51, Skyline 14

The visiting Kicking Mules put a damper on Skyline’s homecoming and the Eagles’ drive for their first ever playoff spot. Skyline falls to 3-3 on the season with two games left on the schedule.

The Eagles held the Kicking Mules scoreless in the first quarter but once the visitors got their running game going it was downhill the rest of the way. Bedford racked up 322 yards on the ground and the defense pitched a shutout in the second half.

Saline 35, Huron 0

Saline led 14-0 after one quarter and 35-0 at halftime before slamming on the breaks in the second half in a 35-0 win at Huron on Friday night.

Saline’s QB Andrew Arbaugh went 8 for 15 passing for 101 yards and a TD. The Hornets’ ground game was a big difference. Brendan Munday had 10 carries for 125 yards and two scores.

The Hornets improved to 6-1 on the season and have already qualified for their seventh straight playoff appearance. The River Rats fall to 0-7.
