Swimming & Diving: Huron battles Skyline to the final event in SEC dual-meet

Thursday night’s high school girls’ swimming and diving meet between city rivals Skyline and Huron was close and riveting with the Eagles pulling out a 96-90 win over the visiting River Rats.

The Rats came charging out of the gate in the opening relay, with sophomores Emily Tran & Annaliese Streeter, senior/captain Olivia Figueroa, and freshman Zannah Baker cruising to an easy win (1:52:82).  Huron’s “B” (sophomore Clara Bowman, senior/captain Susan Dowling, junior Anna Leone, and freshman Felicia Sang) took third (2:04:54).

Huron sophomore Abbey Ketslakh won a tight victory (1:55:45) over Alison Haak (1:56.27) in the 200 Free.   Huron’s freshman Kathryn Hemmila (2:09:13) got the fifth place points in that race.

In the 200 IM, Skyline’s Hannah Jyawook (2:08:20) took first place honors, with A. Streeter (2:12:34) in 2nd, Leone in 4th (2:24.14) and Sang (2:28.12) in 5th.  In the 50 free, Skyline’s Claire Kozma (25.81) eked out a win over Huron’s Yu Jin Hyun (25.83), as did Deininger, taking 3rd (26.23) over 4th place Z. Baker (26.26).

On the diving board, Skyline’s state champion Zain Smith withdrew at the last minute but still left some stellar divers in the competition. Diving for the Eagles, Paige Sunderman (263.60) captured first, just ahead of Annie Costello (260.30), and while only Sami Ruud (201.30), and captain/senior Becca Darnell (195.70), scored Rat points, for 3rd and 4th, respectively, Huron divers took non-scoring 5th (sophomore Julie Park, with 156.35), 6th (senior Brooke Brenner, 155.05), and 7th(junior Anna Boerst 152.05).

Other Huron event winners were Ketslakh, 1st in the 100 Free (54.01), Tran in the 100 Back (1:01:07), A. Streeter in the 100 Breast (1:10:34), and the 200 Free relay squad of Ketslakh, Z. Baker, Hyun, and A. Streeter, who held off Allison Haak in the final leg, finishing 1:40:51 to Skyline’s 1:40.61.

Also putting points on the board for the Rats included 100 Fly competitors, Emily Tran , 2nd with 1:01.92,  Leone , 3rd (1:04.67) and sophomore Clara Bowman, 5th, (1:07.55); 100 Free swimmers Hyun, 3rd (56.80), and Z. Baker, 5th (58.89); 500 Free participant Dowling, 4th (6:01.57); backstrokers Bowman, 3rd (1:07.86), and Figueroa, 4th (1:09.01); and breaststroker Dowling, 5th (1:17.23).

The Rats will take nine swimmers (Z. Baker, Bowman, Dowling, Hyun, Ketslakh, Leone, A. Streeter, Tran, and sophomore Elizabeth Li) and three divers (Costello, Darnell, and Ruud) to EMU on Saturday for the annual MISCA meet.

Huron will finish out their regular season in Saline on Thursday, Oct. 18. Start time for that meet is 6 pm.
