Crew: Eagles impressive despite strong competition, brisk weather

Story by Terri Middleton

Skyline Crew journeyed to picturesque Devil’s Lake near Adrian on Saturday to take part in a regatta hosted by the Adrian College Rowing Team. Skyline rowers, along with five other teams from Ann Arbor, Orchard Lake and the Toledo area, braved morning temperatures that hovered in the 30s.

With mist still rising from the lake, rowers launched the first boats, thus beginning a full day of head-to-head racing.

Teams competed in Men’s and Women’s races of 1500m distance in Eights (8 rowers and a coxswain) and Fours (4 rowers and a coxswain). By mid-afternoon however, the winds had picked up enough for race officials to shorten the last few races to 750m for the safety of the rowers.

Skyline boats did well amidst stiff competition earning multiple first, second and third place finishes. These results bode well for a strong spring season.

The team races at their final Fall regatta on Oct. 28 in Lake Leelenau.

Special thanks to Manitou Beach Marina for allowing teams to stage boats, pitch food tents and park vehicles on their premises on short notice.
