Division 1 Tennis: Huron, Pioneer headed to state finals after dominating regionals

 

The Huron tennis team won six of eight flights at Thursday’s Division 1 tennis regional at Woodhaven High School to qualify for the state finals on Oct. 19-20 at the Greater Midland Tennis Center.

Pioneer also had a strong regional showing to finish second and also earn a trip to the state finals.

Owen Kelley took first at one singles and Henry Zhou won two doubles for the River Rats.

Huron swept the doubles events: Max Brodkey / Aayush Unadkat took first at one doubles; Nick Grosh / T.j. Bai took first at two doubles; Sammy Clyde / Pranav Sharma won three doubles; and Nikhil Grish / Vincent Tremonti won four doubles.

Huron’s Michael Shi was runner-up at three singles and Derek Zhu was second at four singles.

Pioneer had two flight champions at Regionals. Stanley Rhodes took first at three singles and Isaac Harrenkohl was first at four doubles.

Oliver Fuchs was a runner-up at one singles for the Pioneers.

Pioneer took second in all four doubles events with Michael Hwang / Sam Berkooz at one doubles; Connor Streeter / Brendan Karsch at two doubles; Drake Malcolm / Evan Roopas at three doubles; and Mikey Clifford / Eric Zhou at four doubles.

Pioneer’s Niki Zakarian did not reach the flight championship but earned a trip to the state finals at two singles.
