Football: Dexter’s first ever postseason opens against undefeated South Lyon

Dexter’s first-round first ever playoff game is set – and it’s not going to be easy.

The Dreadnaughts (6-3 overall) will travel up US-23 to face undefeated South Lyon in a District 2 Region 2 matchup. The Lions went 9-0 including three wins over playoff teams. None of Dexter’s six wins came against teams that made this year’s postseason.

The other side of the bracket is Walled Lake Western (6-3) vs. Fenton (7-2).

Dexter reached the sixth-win by rallying from 27 points down with less than 8 minutes left two weeks to beat Lincoln 48-42. The Dreads fell on Friday to Whitehall 23-13 in the final regular-season game.

It’s already been a historic run for the Dreadnaughts, who came into this season following four losing seasons. Dexter’s last win came on Sept. 20, 2013 against Adrian.

Rob Rubick, on the MHSAA Selection Show, called South Lyon “a sleeper.”

The Lions won only one game last season after reaching the playoffs in 2016.

This year, South Lyon ran the table in the tough KLAA. One of the Lions’ big wins came over Walled Lake Western (29-19) two weeks ago before finishing the year with a 20-15 win over rival South Lyon East.

The Lions also beat Birmingham Seaholm (7-2) and White Lake Lakeland (6-3).

Other games of interest:

Chelsea (6-3) at Grosse Ile (9-0)
Temperance Bedford (5-4) at Dearborn Heights Crestwood (8-1)
Kalamazoo Central (6-3) at Saline (8-1)
Brighton (7-2) at East Kentwood (8-1)
