Field Hockey: Postseason begins with wins for Huron, Pioneer and FGR

 

The MHSFHA playoff season began last week and it was an impressive performance for the local teams.

Second-seeded Huron, the defending state champion in D-1, defeated Academy of the Sacred Heart 5-0 in a first-round game. The River Rats will face Novi in a quarterfinal match at 5 p.m. on Tuesday at Huron. Novi, the seventh seed, defeated Chelsea 2-0 in their opening-round game.

Pioneer, the third seed, cruised to a 7-0 win over 14th seeded Mercy in a first-round game. The Pioneers will play sixth-seeded Country Day at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Pioneer. Country Day won 2-0 over Cranbrook-Kingswood in a first-round game.

Skyline, the No. 9 seed, lost to eighth-seeded Forest Hills 2-0 on Friday.

In Division 2, Father Gabriel Richard defeated Regina 3-1 in an opening-round game. The Irish host Grosse Pointe South at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday.

The locals, should they advance, won’t have far to travel in the later rounds. Both semifinal games will be Oct. 25 at Saline. The championship game is at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 27 in Dexter.
