Girls Cross Country: Pioneers turn close race into SEC Championship title

The Pioneer girls’ cross country team took the top two spots and held off the fast-charging Saline Hornets to win the SEC Red Championships on Thursday at Hudson Mills in Dexter.

Pioneer crossed the finish line with 32 points, only 13 better than the second-place Hornets. Bedford was third with 58 points followed by Skyline (113), Huron (126) and Monroe (157).

It wasn’t surprising to see Pioneer finish with the top two spots but a little surprising in the order as junior Zofia Dudek switched gears and took first place overall with a time of 18:29.2. Teammate Sarah Forsyth, a freshman, was second in 18:32.7.

Dudek, who finished 20th at the state finals last year, competed in just her second race of the season. She was third at the Ypsi RunCo River Rat Open on Oct. 12 and helps give the Pioneers an impressive top three at the front of the lineup.

The third leg of that trifecta is junior Anna Vogel who placed fifth on Thursday with a time of 19:10.9. Freshman Charlotte Batra continues her impressive rookie season with an eighth-place finish in 19:23.6.

Pioneer senior Mallory Dawes was 16th in 19:40.6, senior Emily Rennich was 18th in 19:55.7 and junior Carina Sanborn was 29th (21:46.4).

The Eagles were led by sophomore Laura O’Brien who took seventh in 19:21.2. The rest of the Skyline runners were grouped together: sophomore Catrin Koselka was 25th (20:50.3), junior Maggie Schmidt was 26th (21:08.3), freshman Caitlyn Donnelly was 27th (21:29.1), junior Arielle Melong was 28th (21:37.1), and senior Lillian Peck was 30th (21:47.4).

Callie Hastie led the River Rats. The senior placed 15th in 19:39.6. Sophomore Sam Hastie was 22nd in 20:41.2, junior Helena Helme was 24th in 20:45.1, sophomore Verena Wu was 32nd in 22:16.1, freshman Mari Park was 33rd in 22:17.3 and sophomore Zoe Solomon was 35th in 22:30.2 for the River Rats.
