Cross Country: Local teams head to Regionals on Saturday

 

On your mark. Get set …

The MHSAA Cross Country Regionals will head to the starting line on Saturday morning. Leading the way for Ann Arbor schools is the talented boys and girls teams from Pioneer.

The Pioneer boys’ team will look to defend its state title as one of the favorites at Region 5 hosted by Gibraltar Carlson at Lake Erie Metropark. Senior Nick Foster, the defending state champion, won last year’s Regional at Lake Erie and leads a talented Pioneer team.

The Pioneer girls’ team also come into the Regional as one of the favorites to advance to the state finals at MIS.

Pioneer is the only Ann Arbor school in Lake Erie’s Division 1 field which includes Saline, Bedford, Lincoln, Dearborn, Belleville, Allen Park, Fordson, Edsel Ford and Monroe among others.

Father Gabriel Richard also will run at Lake Erie in the Division 2 race that includes Chelsea, Adrian, Divine Child, Grosse Ile, Tecumseh and Trenton.

Skyline heads to Region 4 hosted by Brighton at Huron Meadows Metro Park. The boys’ team is coming off an impressive second-place finish at the SEC Championships last week. The talented field includes Dexter, East Lansing, Hartland, Howell, Lansing Everett, Lansing Waverly, Okemos and both South Lyon schools.

Huron will play host to Region 6 at Willow Metropark. The River Rats will run against a strong field that includes Canton, Berkley, Salem, Plymouth, Novi, Northville, all three Livonia schools and several Detroit schools.

The MHSAA State Finals are Saturday, Nov. 3 at MIS.
