DCO Season Opener Nov. 4 Features “Enigma”

From the DCO:

The Dexter Community Orchestra kicks off its 2018-19 season Sunday, November 4 at 4 p.m. in the Dexter High School Center for the Performing Arts.  Guest conductor Diego Piedra will lead the group.

The concert will feature three well-known composers of the Romantic Era – Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms and Edward Elgar. Brahms was “discovered” by Schumann with whom he formed a strong artistic and personal bond (complicated by Brahms’ love for Schumann’s wife Clara). Edward Elgar drew inspiration from both composers, and has been called the “English Brahms”.

The program opens with Brahms’ good-natured and majestic “Academic Festival Overture”, based on popular college songs. Elgar’s “Enigma Variations” is a suite consisting of a theme and 14 variations which offer sometimes serious, sometimes whimsical musical portraits of Elgar’s friends (and, in one case, a bulldog). The concert will conclude with Schumann’s heroic Fourth Symphony.

Now in its 14th season, the DCO will use three of its concerts to audition candidates for the position of music director (a position previously held by Anthony Elliott). It is expected that one of the three guest conductors will be offered the permanent music director position.

As always, DCO concerts are free to the public. Donations in support of the orchestra are gratefully accepted.

The Dexter Community Orchestra is a musical group located in Dexter, Michigan. The DCO is dedicated to cultural enrichment through live symphonic music seeking to provide the many benefits of live musical performance.

The DCO is proud to offer a place for volunteer musicians to play and an opportunity for individuals and families to experience the magic of live classical music. They welcome musicians and volunteers to help make the season a resounding success.
