The start of winter brings an enjoyable variety of monthly and holiday themed events for all ages to the Dexter District Library. Everyone is invited to attend these free programs.
Saturday, December 1 our new Ukulele Club meets at 10:00 am. Teens in grades 5 through 12 are invited to try out one of our ukuleles, learn basic cords and song structure from a professional, or bring your own ukulele to play and share your knowledge. All levels welcome, including beginners. Light refreshments provided. The group will meet again on Saturday, January 5 at 10:00 am.
Dexter Community Schools have an early release day on Tuesday, December 4, stop by at 1:00 pm for Movie & Popcorn for Kids and enjoy How the Grinch Stole Christmas starring Jim Carrey. Enjoy a free bag of popcorn and this seasonal family movie on the big screen. Registration is not required.
At 4:00 pm, the First Tuesday Lego Club returns. Kids in grade K through 8 are invited to spend an afternoon making their own Lego creations while visiting with old friends and making new ones. Legos are provided by the Library.
Get up close and personal with a live reindeer outside the Library on Friday, December 14 from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm. On the lower level, we’ll have a variety of holiday crafts for kids. Registration is not required, everyone is welcome.
Instant Pot Cooking for the Holidays comes to the Library on Saturday from 1:00 to 2:30 pm. Adults, teens and tweens in grades 5 and up are invited to enjoy an afternoon with Mary Spencer of Taste: A Cook’s Place in Northville. Mary will create a variety of holiday dishes and desserts using her assortment of Instant Pots, the recent, popular cooking trend. This class is demonstration style but participants will get to enjoy samplings of all the dishes presented by Mary and her assistant. Registration is recommended, beginning November 1 in the Teen Zone or by calling 734-426-4477.
Holiday Cards and Crafts comes to the Library on Saturday, December 15 from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm. Kids, tweens and teens are invited to join us for an hour of crafting as we make an assortment of cards and small gifts for family and friends. Samples and patterns will be available for various skill levels or create your own designs. Festive music and snacks will be provided. Registration is not required.
On Tuesday, December 18, children ages six and under, along with their caregiver, can stop by at 11:00 am for our Drop-In Holiday Story Time and Craft. Join us for 30 minutes of stories and music celebrating winter and the holidays. Refreshments and a simple craft will be provided following story time and registration is not required.
Magic: The Gathering (MTG) returns on Friday, December 21 from 6:00 to 8:30 pm. Teens in grades 6 through 12 are invited to join us for monthly MTG games and pizza. Prizes awarded to top players. This event is co-sponsored with SRSLY Dexter. Registration is required.
The Library will be closed on Monday, December 24 and Tuesday, December 25 for the Christmas holiday. We will also be closed on Monday, December 31 and Tuesday, January 1 for the New Year holiday.
On Thursday, December 27 from 2:00 to 3:00 pm, join us for Makerspace. This is a fun, drop-In program for grades K through 8. Dexter Schools are closed, stop by and make, build, craft and explore. Participate in a variety of open-ended activities. We supply the materials and you supply the imagination. Registration is not required.
Registration for Winter Story Times begins Friday, December 28. Winter Story Times for toddlers and preschoolers will start on Monday, January 14 and run until Thursday, March 7. Registration is required and parents or caregivers of children may register in person at the Library or by calling 734-426-4477. Space is limited so registration will be on a first come first served basis.
Children 18 months to 3 years of age may sign up for one Toddler Story Time. Toddler Story Times are held on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10:30 am. Children under 18 months may attend, however books and activities are geared for toddlers. Children 3 to 5 years of age may sign up for one Preschool Story Time. Preschool Story Times are held on Mondays or Tuesdays at 11:30 am. Combined Toddler/Preschool Story Times will be offered on Wednesdays at 11:30 am. Drop-In Story Times for all ages will be offered on Thursdays at 10:30 am in the lower level meeting room from January 18 to March 8. Infants are welcome at story times with their siblings. Parents or caregivers are required to attend. Each session lasts approximately 30 minutes.
Winter Story Times for children include picture, pop-up and interactive books, flannel-board stories, songs, puppets, finger plays, crafts and other activities that encourage a love of reading to your child.

Thursday, January 3 at 11:00 am, Leslie Science Center Presents “Understanding Owls” a live animal presentation. These owls will engage, delight, and educate you during a personal visit to the Library. Classification, conservation, and survival techniques are just a few of the topics we will explore by observing live birds. Kids in kindergarten and up will be amazed as they discover what life is like for these nighttime predators. Registration is not required.
Celebrate the 20th anniversary of the release of the first Harry Potter book. On Friday, January 4, join us for a Harry Potter Party from 2:00 to 3:30 pm. Crafts, snacks and games for ages 6 and up. Registration is not required, everyone is welcome.
