Boys Basketball: River Rats build early lead, cruise over Henry Ford in A2 Classic

When you come out and knock down triples as if they are layups it’s going to be a good night. And it was a great first quarter that led to a good night and an easy win for the Huron boys’ basketball team.

The River Rats knocked down five triples and scored 25 first-quarter points and never looked back in a 82-46 win Saturday over Henry Ford in an Ann Arbor Classic game at Huron HS. The victory came less than 24 hours after Huron knocked off Brother River 55-52.

The River Rats, who feature seven sophomores and only two seniors on the roster, had great balance on the offensive end as six players scored seven or more points. London Dottery led the way with 12 points and Toussaint Fancher and Mike Robionson each scored 10. Trey Gardett had eight points and Kimar Crawford and Kingsley Perkins each scored seven.

Devon Womack

The River Rats roared to a quick lead thanks to some long-range shooting. Huron’s first basket of the night came on a triple by Aayush Unudkot. A nice drive and scoop by Devon Womack made it 5-1.

Robinson knocked down a triple to make it 8-1 and then hit another to push the lead to 12-1. It’s easy to see where this is headed.

Julian Lewis knocked down a three-pointer to make it 15-4 and then Tyson Edmondson hit a triple from the corner to give the River Rats a commanding 20-4 lead as everyone was getting in on the fun.

Gardett turned a nice drive to the basket into two points as Huron led 25-10 after the first quarter.

Dottery scored inside off a nice pass from Ira Brann and then hit another bucket to make it 33-16 with 3:08 left in the second quarter. Fancher scored and then Dillon Studstill hit a triple to push Huron’s lead to 43-18 with 1 minute left in the first half.

A layup by Gardett made it 56-24 as the River Rats led 64-30 after three quarters.
