The Skyline girls’ basketball team didn’t just land in the win column they did one of those giant leaps with an impressie 54-18 win over Lincoln on Tuesday night. The Eagles led 11-4 after one quarter and then scored 19 points in the second quarter to take a 30-10 lead into halftime.
Skyline outscored Lincoln 4-2 in the third quarter and 20-6 in the fourth quarter.
Sophmore Blessing Batalonga led the Eagles with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Junior Janee Faulkner had 11 points and five steals in the win.
“We knew this would be a chance to get a win and we definitely wanted this game,” said Skyline Coach Johnnie Horne. “If I am not mistaken last year we did not get our first win until Christmas break, so it feels good to get in the win column a little earlier this year.”
Horne said the Eagles did a good job of pressuring Lincoln in the first half which allowed them to get out in the open court for some easy transition buckets.
“Blessing came out with a ton of energy and was all over the offensive and defensive glass tonight,” Horne said. “She ended up having nine offensive rebounds which came from sure effort and determination.”
Skyline struggled offensively in the third quarter.
“Thankfully our defense held them to only two points,” Horne said. “I challenged them before the fourth quarter to not lose their focus and energy, but instead to learn how to close out teams. They responded by doing just that.”
Junior Cammi Tirico opened up the fourth quarter with a steal and took it in for a layup which set the tone for the final quarter.
