The Pioneer girls’ basketball team used a big second quarter and an even bigger third quarter to pull away from crosstown rival Skyline on Friday night. The host Pioneers pushed a 34-17 halftime lead to 48-24 after three quarters and coasted to a 60-31 victory over the Eagles in an SEC Red showdown in the first of a varsity doubleheader.
Asaria Turman led the Pioneers with 15 points. Corine Burgard had 12 points and Mya Hicks scored 10. Every player in uniform scored for the Pioneers.
Skyline was led by Chala House who scored 13 points. Arielle Melong scored six and Cammi Tirico had five points for the Eagles.
Whitney Gallagher gave the hosts an early 6-2 lead in the first quarter. But Skyline’s House answered with consecutive triples to tie the game at 8-8 with 2:20 left in the quarter.
Pioneer’s Ilena Garrett had a steal and the hosts turned the turnover into a jumper from Corine Burgard and a 10-8 lead. A jumper by Hicks sent the Pioneer’s into the second quarter with a 12-9 lead.

Pioneer scored five quick points in the first minute of the second quarter. After Asaria Turman scored inside, Stewart knocked down a triple to make it 17-9. Skyline’s Cammi Tirico scored but Asaria Turman answered at the other end. Tirico then knocked down a triple to cut the deficit to 20-14.
But the Pioneers would end the second quarter on a 14-3 run to take a 34-17 lead into halftime.
Pioneer kept on rolling in the third quarter. Asaria Turman scored to make it 37-19 and then had a put-back for another basket and a 41-19 lead. A three-pointer by Hicks from the deep corner put the Eagles in a deep 44-21 hole. Pioneer’s Davi Matthews had a sweet sky hook to make it 48-24 after three quarters.
