Hockey: Big second period leads Dexter to 8-0 mercy win over WL Central

The Dexter hockey team measured up Walled Lake Central in the first period. In the second period they tore it up with six goals on their way to an 8-0 win over the host Vikings in a game that ended just a couple minutes into the third period.

“We started slow but got one at the end of the first period,” said Dexter assistant coach Tyler Grimshaw. “We figured it out in the second period and started playing much better. We’ve been playing better lateley. They are starting to come together.”

Dexter improves to 7-4 on the season.

Alex Mills opened the scoring in the first period with a goal late to give Dexter a 1-0 lead. Nate Kniesteadt picked up the assist.

Early in the second period, Dexter scored a power-play goal to make it 2-0 when Kyle Burke scored with assists from Mills and Ryan Lotz. At 12:15 of the second, Lotz scored with assists from Burke and Luke Coogan.

Captain Kyle Knapp made it 4-0 when he scored with assists from Brendan Busdeker and Trevor Eisele at 10:48 of the second period. Yes, the goals were coming fast and furious for the Dreads.

It was fitting that No. 5 for Dexter, Eisele, would score to make it 5-0 with assists from Busdeker and Dylan Fox. With 6:07 left in the period, Mills netted his second of the game with an assist from Burke.

Kniesteadt scored with 4:54 left with an assist from Knapp to push the lead to 7-0.
The Dreadnaughts also killed two penalties in the second period, including part of a 5-minute major.

With 15:16 left in the third period, Dexter ended the game when Busdeker scored to make it 8-0.

Goalie Kris Eberly picked up the shutout between the pipes for Dexter.
