Huron welcomed Division 2 defending state champion Dexter and SEC league rival Temperance-Bedford to the River Rat pool on Thursday and as expected the Dexter-Huron match went down to the final stroke.
The talented and deep Dreadnaughts won the final 400 freestyle relay to secure a 95-90 victory over the equally talented River Rats in an SEC crossover dual meet.
Dexter’s Niklas Eberly, Clayton Kinnard, Michael Baumann and Casey Dolen went 3 minutes, 20.55 seconds to win the final 400 free relay and lock up the victory for the visitors. Huron’s team of Jonathan Jiang, AJ Stewart, Jonathan Wang and Dane Hubers touched third in 3:31.46.
Both Dexter and Huron knocked off Bedford in the other dual-meet results. Dexter won 115-70 while Huron toppled the Kicking Mules 114-71.

The Dreadnaughts made a statement from the opening splash by winning the medley relay. The team of Kinnard, Eberly, Paul Schaefer and Tanner Sharp went 1:39.54 to garner first-place points in the medley relay. Huron’s team of Wang, Stewart, Kevin Zhou and Eli Atkinson placed second in 1:41.33.
The Rivers Rats took first with Hubers (1:50.18) and third with Ben Hires (1:52.02) in the 200 freestyle. Dolen was fourth for Dexter (1:52.58).
Dexter’s Kinnard stood in the winner’s circle in the 200 IM after touching first in 2:01.43. Huron’s Atkinson was third (2:06.56) and teammate Ji Ung Hyun was fourth (2:09.16).
Eberly won the sprint to the wall in the 50 freestyle with a first-place time of 21.49 seconds. Sharp was third (22.77) and Wang placed fourth (23.51).
Huron’s Kyle Huehn won the diving with 281 points. Dexter’s Cole Warren was second (243.70) and Dexter’s Yaw Oduro was fourth (153.90).
Eberly won his second individual race when he took first in the butterfly in 51.37. Stewart was third (54.84) and Eric Cardwell fourth (1:00.63) for Huron.
Atkinson took first in the 100 freestyle with a time of 50.16. Michael Baumann was third (51.74) and Dolen fourth (52.0) for Dexter.
Hires went 4:57.82 to pick up first-place points for Huron in the 500 free. Schaefer touched second for Dexter in 5:00.47 and Hubers was third for Huron in 5:00.94.
Dexter (Dolen, Baumann, Sharp and Nathan Norris) took second in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:31.92. The Huron team of Jiang, Kevin Zhou, Hubers and Atkinson was third in 1:34.80.
Kinnard touched second in the backstroke in 56.73. Wang was third (57.28) and Hyun fourth (59.49) for the River Rats.
Sharp won the breaststroke for Dexter with a time of 1:02.99. Huron’s Zhou was second (1:03.58) and Dexter’s Schaefer third (1:04.29).
