Dexter head coach Tim Cain talked about his young team playing with more composure after last week’s 86-50 loss to Lincoln. The Dreadnaughts certainly upped the composure level and quality of play on Tuesday against a talented Ypsilanti team in an SEC White Division showdown.
But the host Dreadnaughts couldn’t close the deal against the Grizzlies. Despite showing signs of improvement and giving Ypsilanti a battle until the end, the Dreads fell 46-40.
“We battled but just didn’t make plays at the end,” said Dexter coach Tim Cain. “It’s a process but at least we are headed in the right direction.
“We were down 16 and cut it to one point with multiple chances to take the lead. Hats off to Ypsilanti. They just made a few more plays.”
The Grizzlies got off to a fast start, leading 16-6 after the first quarter. Ypsilanti led 26-22 at halftime as defense dominated the game.
The Dreadnaughts cut the lead to 40-35 after three quarters.
Junior Marco Lucchesi hit three triples and finished with 13 points for the Dreads. Sophomore Colin Parachek also scored 13 for Dexter. Junior Antwan Ficklen scored all of his seven points in the second half.
Dexter hosts Chelsea on Friday in a girls-boys doubleheader. The girls play at 5:30 p.m. followed by the boys at 7 p.m.
