Girls Basketball: Pioneers keep on rolling, knock off Saline in SEC contest

The Pioneer girls’ basketball team turned an explosive start into another victory on Tuesday night. Pioneer scored 19 points in the first quarter against Saline and never looked back in an impressive 65-51 win in an SEC Red Division showdown.

The Pioneers improve to 7-1 on the season.

Getting off to an uncharacteristic fast start, Pioneer scored 19 points in the first quarter, led by freshman point guard Lauren DeWolf, who scored eight points.

The second quarter was more of the same with Whitney Gallagher hitting two triples to help send the Pioneers into halftime with a 39-26 lead.

The Hornets rallied in the third quarter with a 12-9 advantage but could not claw their way all the way back.

DeWolf led all scorers with 20 points followed by Mya Hicks with 12, Gallagher with 11 and Asaria Turman with 10.

Pioneer hosts Ann Arbor Huron in a cross-town match on Friday night as part of a boys-girls doubleheader. The girls play at 5:30 p.m. followed by the boys at 7 p.m.
