The Skyline girls’ basketball team brought home a win and a trophy in the MLK Classic at Arbor Prep this weekend. A strong team performance propelled the Eagles past Saginaw Arthur Hill to a 54-42 victory.
“I’m really proud of these girls,” said Skyline Coach Johnnie Horne. “They’ve been working hard and have played some close games against some strong teams. They deserve this win.”
Skyline junior captain Janee Faulkner brought home the game MVP award.
Skyline got a quick start in the first quarter by hitting three 3’s, one each from Alaina Heetderks, Chala House, and Cammi Tirico, and went up 16-5. Blessing Batalonga took over in the second quarter scoring 9 of her 17 points, and Skyline led at halftime 33-16.
The Eagles came out strong in the second half with six players putting up points. Skyline’s deep bench is a huge asset and allows Skyline to play aggressive and fast.
Saginaw put the pressure on in the second half and forced Skyline into some turnovers, but the Eagles held on and finished strong in the 11-point win. Saginaw was unable to stop Blessing Batalonga’s drives to the hoop. The sophomore guard led all scorers with 17 points.
Skyline’s balanced attack proved to be too much to stop as an impressive eight players puts points on the board: Janee Faulkner had 10, Cammi Tirico with 8, Chala House and Arielle Melong each had 5, Clara Salata with 4, Alaina Heetderks with 3, and Renee Faulkner with 2. Freshmen Maya Wooley and Martina Sanchez continue to provide valuable minutes and played well in the victory.
The Eagles take on the River Rats at Huron on Friday. Game time is 5:30 p.m. with the boys’ game following at 7. JV tips off at 4.
