The Huron girls’ basketball team has been climbing the ladder of improvement all season and while they haven’t reached the top yet, they showed on Friday night that they are making great progress.
The River Rats were dominant from the get-go against rival Skyline and built an early lead before coasting to a 59-25 victory over the very young Eagles.
Every player who stepped on the floor for Huron scored in the win. They were led by Jadyn Smith (12 points), Reeya Patel (11 points), Alexa Lyon (10 points) and Siena Smith (seven points).
Skyline was led by Janee Faulkner with six points. Arielle Melong and Cammi Tirico each scored five.
A layup off the break by Kaiden Glenn gave the hosts an early 6-2 lead. A nice drive to the hoop and basket from Patel made it 8-4. With 1 minute left in the opening quarter, Khady Ba’s put-back pushed the River Rats to a 12-4 lead.
Huron led 13-4 after the first quarter.
A triple by Skyline’s Alaina Heetderks cut the deficit to 15-7 early in the second quarter but the River Rats switched gears and went on an 11-4 run. A jumper by Siena Smith gave Huron a 22-7 lead.
The River Rats led 26-11 at halftime.
A three-pointer by Jadyn Smith gave Huron a 31-12 lead early in the third quarter. Janee Faulkner’s triple for Skyline cut the lead to 31-17. A basket inside by the Eagles’ Melong cut the lead to 33-19.
The Eagles had some chances to cut even more into the lead but shots were off the mark, including some good looks on three pointers.
A triple from the wing by Mckenzie Maciejewski pushed Huron’s lead to 20 points at 39-19 with 1:40 left in the third quarter.
Huron led 43-19 after three quarters.
A nice three-point play by Alexa Lyon gave the hosts a 48-19 lead early in the final period.
