Boys Basketball: Defense leads Greenhills over University Liggett


The Greenhills boys’ basketball team didn’t have long to celebrate Tuesday’s big win over Royal Shrine. The Gryphons teed it up on Thursday for a game with Grosse Pointe University Liggett and aced another test in a convincing 52-16 win as defense ruled the night.

“We started a little slow with a big game Tuesday and no practice in between,” said Greenhills Coach Andrew Wright. “The defense really took hold in the second quarter and everything started to click.”

Greenhills led just 9-8 after the first quarter before their suffocating defense took over. The Gryphons outscored Liggett 15-2 in the second quarter to take a 24-10 halftime lead.

Greenhills outscored Liggett 19-1 in the third quarter and 9-5 in the final period.

Drew Sachs made 6 of 10 shots from the field including three triples to lead the way with 21 points. Stevie Snabes scored eight, Leo Fried had seven and Will Kennedy scored six for Greenhills.

The Gryphons (12-1 overall) host Cranbrook Kingswood at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. They host Our Lady of the Lakes at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
