Girls Basketball: Pioneer pulls away from Skyline to improve to 11-1

The Pioneer girls’ basketball team took a 10-point lead into halftime and then stretched it to 24 points after three in a 51-25 victory over host and city rival Skyline on Friday night.

The Pioneers (11-1), as is their signature, had balanced scoring. Lauren DeWolf led the way with 10 points. Whitney Gallagher and Coby LaPointe each scored eight points. Felicia Stewart scored seven.

Alaina Heetderks led the Eagles with six points. Janee Faulkner scored four for Skyline.

Senior Coby LaPointe got the Pioneers started with two baskets inside off a couple of nice passes to give the visitors an early 9-2 lead. A jumper by Skyline’s Clare Salata cut the deficit to 13-6.

Pioneer led 13-6 after one quarter.

The Eagles started the second quarter strong and didn’t let the Pioneers get away. A nice drive to the hoop by Janee Faulkner and a basket inside by Alaina Heetderks cut the deficit to 15-10.

But LaPointe scored inside again and Lauren DeWolf hit two free throws to push the lead to 19-10. Pioneer’s Whitney Gallagher knocked down a triple from the corner to give the visitors a 22-12 lead with 2:20 left in the first half.

Pioneer led 24-12 at the break.

The Pioneers have a busy week coming up. They host Monroe on Monday, play at Saline on Wednesday and play a varsity doubleheader on Friday at Huron. The girls play at 5:30 p.m. followed by the boys.
