Swimming: Skyline races past Huron in SEC dual-meet


The cold weather forced a change in the schedule but that didn’t seem to slow down either Skyline or Huron in an SEC dual-meet on Friday – not Thursday as scheduled.

While basketballs bounced in the nearby gym, the Skyline and Huron swimmers and divers took to the water like fish to water and put up some impressive times. When the results were all added up Skyline came out on top 124-61 in a meet of top-notch programs.

Skyline splashed things off with a win in the 200 medley relay. The team of Ben Kurniawan, Kareem El-Tawil, Ben Keith and Matthew Lee took first place in 1 minute, 41.05 seconds.

Skyline’s team of Atticus Dewey, Alex Kurniawan, Kevin Zhou and Jonathan Jiang was second in 1:45.12. Huron’s team of Ji Ung Hyun, Kevin Zhou, Jonathan Wang and Jonathan Jiang took third in 1:45.67.

The Eagles went one-two in the 200 free with Kyle Tschannen first (1:45.88) and Keith Kozma second (1:46.84). Huron’s Eli Atkinson was third (1:47.53) and teammate Dane Hubers was fourth (1:52.31).

The Eagles landed in the top three spots in the 200 IM: Ben Kurniawan was first (2:01.3), Dewey second (2:08.80) and Alex Kurniawan third (2:09.76). Huron’s Hyun was fourth (2:12.48).

Huron’s AJ Stewart took first in the 50 free with a time of 22.59. Keith was second (23.14), Shane MacNeil third (23.52) and El-Tawil fourth (23.52) for Skyline.

Skyline’s Henry Schirmer won the diving with 334.15 points. Huron’s Kyle Huehn was second (248.45), Skyline’s Andrew Ceely was third (195.70) and Huron’s Alex Joseph was fourth (114.10).

Skyline’s Ben Kurniawan was first in the butterfly with a time of 52.30. Huron’s Stewart was second (53.85) and Alex Kurniawan was third (56.90).

Kozma touched first in the 100 freestyle (49.28) with Lee second (50.35) for Skyline. Huron’s Jiang was third (51.22).

Keith won the 500 free for the Eagles with a time of 4:57.27. Ben Hires was second (4:58.36), Atkinson third (5:02.79) and Hubers fourth (5:10.97) for Huron.
Skyline (Tschannen, Kozma, McKelvey and Lee) won the 200 free relay in 1:31.17. Huron (Wang, Stewart, Moskus and Atkinson) was second (1:34.30).

Tschannen was first in the backstroke in 54.90. Hyun was second (59.40) for Huron and Ben Deininger was third (59.70) for Skyline.

El-Tawil won the breaststroke for Skyline in 1:03.18. Zhou was second (1:03.33) and Arthur Zhang third (1:04.93) for Huron. Skyline’s Conor Pyle was fourth (1:07.88) for Skyline.

Skyline’s foursome of Kozma, Ben Kurniawan, Keith and Tschannen won the 400 free relay in 3:22.07. Huron’s team of Hubers, Stewart, Atkinson and Wang took second in 3:27.22.
