Boys Basketball: Skyline outguns Monroe in SEC matchup


The tone was set early.

Monroe and Skyline combined for 54 points in the first quarter as offense took center stage in an SEC Red Division matchup at Skyline. The Eagles provided a little more firepower, led by senior Ryan Wade, and pulled off a 75-72 win in overtime over the Trojans for the second straight victory in a three-game week.

Wade had a great opening quarter hitting four three-point shots to lead the Eagles to 24 points in the first quarter. Normally that would be more than enough to grab an early lead but the Trojans were took huge advantage of a poor defensive effort by Skyline and scored 30 first-quarter points.

Skyline played better defense moving forward but Monroe had a lot of confidence and kept battling the whole game.

Monroe led 43-39 at halftime. Skyline outscored the visitors 18-12 in the third quarter. The Trojans outscored the Eagles 13-11 in the final quarter to force overtime.

The Eagles outscored the Trojans 7-4 in the overtime period to earn the win.

Wade had 29 points along with many assists and played a very solid game for the Eagles. Davion Pipkins was great defensively and on the boards. Chris Cayton had 12 big points and worked hard on both ends.

Jack Williams hit two huge shots in overtime scoring 5 of his 13 points in the overtime period to go along with some big rebounds. Ashay Arora hit a big triple in the third quarter to swing the momentum to Skyline for one of the first times in the game.

DeSean Munson had six points and was in foul trouble most of the game and Jaylin Cooper added five points.

Monroe was led by Toryn Johnson with 23 points who was very tough throughout the game and Monroe had four players in double figures overall.

Skyline will host Saline on Friday.
