Girls Basketball: Young Huron knocks off division-leader Pioneer 52-50

Back and forth they went – Pioneer and Huron in a girls’ basketball game that featured plenty of big plays, blocked shots, three-pointers, steals and everything in between.

In the end it came down to which team took the last shot – or didn’t take the last shot in this case.

With 3.1 seconds left in the game and down 52-50, Pioneer called a time out. They set up a play to go inside and tried to get the ball down low to star center Asaria Turman – and why not she had 28 points on the night.

But Huron’s Kaiden Glenn stepped in front of the Pioneer senior for a steal to seal the River Rats’ upset victory and hand the Pioneers their first SEC Red Division loss of the season. Defense played a huge part in Huron’s win as Glenn and Jadyn Smith, among others, stepped up defensively in the final minutes to secure the victory.

Pioneer falls to 12-2 overall. Huron improves to 7-9 on the season after wins this past week over Saline and Pioneer with a loss to Bedford in between.

Jadyn Smith led the River Rats with 13 points. Reeya Patel, who made some big plays in the fourth quarter, scored 12. Alexa Lyon and Glenn each scored seven and Siena Smith scored six in the win.
