Girls Hockey: Pioneers keep on rolling, knock off Liggett


The Pioneer girls’ hockey team started strong and finished stronger in a solid 5-2 win on Saturday over Liggett at the Vets Arena. The Pioneers improved to 8-4-1 overall on the season (6-2-1 league).

Host Pioneer scored two goals in the first period and carried a 2-0 lead into the third period. They added three more goals in the third, while allowing two to the visitors.

At 3:30 of the first period, Anna Thomas scored with an assist from Kayleigh Barricklow to put the Pioneers on the board. Less than a minute later, Sydney Monte Sano scored with assists from Ava Millman and Rory Campbell to push Pioneer ahead 2-0.

After a scoreless second period, Ligget put two on the board (3:04 and 8:45) to make it even at 2-2. But the Pioneers responded right away.

Barricklow scored from Millman at 9:00 to regain the lead at 3-2. Millman (from Thomas) at 13:59 made it 4-2 and then Katie Pascoe (from Sara Negrin) at 14:31 iced the victory at 6-2.

The Pioneer outshot Liggett 40-26.

Pioneer hosts Grosse Pointe North at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. They play Skyron at 7 p.m. on Saturday at the Vet.
