Boys Basketball: An early look at the District playoff matchups for local teams

Let’s take a look ahead as the local boys’ basketball teams continue to dribble their way towards the postseason – and what a postseason it should be.

Division 1

Dexter hosts District 17 and will feature some interesting match-ups right off the bat. The host Dreadnaughts will face Brighton in the opening round at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 25. The other side of the bracket has rivals South Lyon East vs. South Lyon in a first-round game at 7 p.m.

The Dexter-Brighton winner will face Pinckney at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 27. Skyline will play the battle of South Lyon winner at 7 p.m. on Feb. 27.

The finals are at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 1.

Let’s head over to Belleville (District 19) with what could be the toughest District in the state. Joining the host Tigers will be Lincoln, Ypsilanti, Pioneer, Huron and Saline. The talented but young River Rats will open with SEC foe Saline in a first-round game at 5 p.m. on Feb. 25.

Belleville vs. Ypsilanti will be the second first-round game on Feb. 25.

With a win, Huron will get a third shot at Pioneer in a semifinal game at 5 p.m. on Feb. 27. The Pioneers drew an opening-round bye.

Lincoln’s Emoni Bates, one of the best players in the country – yes, that’s country not county, scored 43 points against Ypsilanti last month. Bates and the Railsplitters will play the winner of the Ypsilanti-Belleville opening-round game on Feb. 27 in the other semifinal game.

The finals are at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 1.

Division 2

Adrian hosts District 53 in Division 2. Father Gabriel Richard will face Chelsea in an opening-round game at 7 p.m. on Feb. 25. The other opening-round game is Tecumseh vs. Onsted. The winner of the Chelsea-FGR game will play Adrian in a semifinal game at 7 p.m. on Feb. 27. Milan will play the other winner. The finals are March 1.

Division 3

Greenhills will host the District 86 Tournament.  The hosts will face Whitmore Lake at 6 p.m. on Feb. 25 in the only first-round game. The winner will play Canton Preparatory at 7 p.m. on Feb. 27.
