Boys Hockey: State playoffs begin next week with several big opening-round games

The MHSAA hockey state playoffs begin next week as the road to USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth for the semifinals and finals will feature plenty of turns, bumps, challenges and rewards.

Three of the local Ann Arbor teams are heading to the Kennedy Ice Arena in Trenton for the Division 2 Regionals with two teams facing off in the opening game. Skyline (12-7) will face Huron (4-15) at 5 p.m. on Feb. 26 in a first-round match-up. The Eagles defeated the River Rats 8-3 on Jan. 16. The winner faces Saline at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 28 in the semifinals.

One of the premier games in the opening round features Pioneer (14-4-3) against Trenton (19-4-1) at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 26. The two teams have not faced each other this season. The Dreads, currently in first place in the SEC White Division (10-5-0 overall), lost four of their first five games but have since gone 10-1. The recent streak includes two wins over Chelsea.

Dexter, which beat Cabrini 6-3 on Wednesday, will face Dearborn Divine Child at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 26 in an opening-round game at the Arctic Coliseum in Chelsea. The Falcons lost their first seven games and are 6-15-1 after their 7-4 win over Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central on Saturday.

The winner will play at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 28 against the winner of Cabrini-Franklin.

Father Gabriel Richard-Greenhills (14-7-1) will play Allen Park at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 25 in another opening-round game at Chelsea. The winner will play at 5 p.m. on Feb. 28 against the winner of Chelsea-Churchill.
