U-M Athletics presents new podcast “Beyond the Wins and Losses”

The University of Michigan Athletic Department and the Executive Education program at the Stephen M. Ross School of Business have teamed up to produce a new podcast, “Beyond the Wins and Losses.”

Each Thursday for the next eight weeks, host Bruce Madej and industry experts Kim Cameron, Scott DeRue and Melanie Weaver-Barnett from the U-M business school will talk to Michigan student-athletes, coaches and administrators to discuss the relationship between sport, academic study and success. “Beyond the Wins and Losses” strives to give listeners insight into the value of sports as a tool in society, business and everyday life.

Former NHL player and legendary University of Michigan ice hockey coach and player Red Berenson joins the first podcast of season one to discuss his journey in sport, his strategy in preparing student-athletes to succeed, and his methods for creating high-performing teams and culture.

Michigan men’s basketball coach John Beilein, softball coach Carol Hutchins, and men’s and women’s swimming coach Mike Bottom will join future episodes of the podcast. U-M alumna and high jumper Dr. Nicole Forrester, Executive Associate Athletic Director and life coach Greg Harden, and track and field All-Americans Erin Finn and Ben Flanagan also will be featured.

“We value the term student-athlete at the University of Michigan,” said Donald R. Shepherd Director of Athletics Warde Manuel. “Athletics allow an individual the opportunity to work as a team to achieve a goal and so much more. These podcasts will offer insight into how sports can help individuals in their careers and, more so, in their lives.”

“The Executive Education program has a history of working with coaches and athletes of all levels,” said Weaver-Barnett, the chief executive education officer at the Stephen M. Ross School of Business. “We believe sports teach many of life’s most important lessons, and our professors including Kim Cameron have worked with the coaching staffs and athletes to develop strategies for different aspects of the sports culture.”

Michigan’s business school is no stranger to the intersection of business and sports. In fact, Michigan Ross has already collaborated with NFL Player Engagement to design a four-day, customized Business Academy program that was initiated in 2014, and the school held its inaugural two-day Sports and Organizational Dynamics Conference in February 2018.

“Beyond the Wins and Losses” is the second podcast the Michigan Athletic Department has produced in the past year. “In the Trenches,” hosted by former All-American and Wolverine football captain Jon Jansen, launched last fall and is produced by the Michigan Sports Network from Learfield IMG College in partnership with Michigan Athletics. “In the Trenches” offers fans an exclusive look at the Wolverines football team, including one-on-one interviews, scouting reports and much more.

“Beyond the Wins and Losses” and “In the Trenches” can be accessed and downloaded on TuneIn, iTunes and Stitcher as well as being available on MGoBlue.com.
