The Greenhills Lawnmowers, the Greenhills HS FIRST robotics team, were the District event winners at the Lincoln Regional Competition, held March 22 and 23 at Ypsilanti’s Lincoln High School. It was a big day for the Lawnmowers, who also won the Team Spirit Award sponsored by FCA Foundation.
The Father Gabriel Richard FIRST the, The Byting Irish, also had a big day. The highest Rookie Seed went to The Byting Irish of Father Gabriel Richard. The Byting Irish also won the Rookie Inspiration Award sponsored by National Instruments.
There are still two weeks of district events left on the FIRST schedule so there are many spots to be filled for the State Finals. But Greenhills and the Dexter Dreadbots have already stamped there tickets.
Pioneer’s team, Pi-Hi Samurai, have played only one of their districts but could qualify with a good showing at Livonia April 4-6.
Grizzly Robotics from Ypsilanti qualified for States with a Chairman’s Award at Milford and Engineering Inspiration Award at Lincoln. The Grizzly Robotics are having quiet the season. The two awards they won are considered great honors and it’s rare for one team to win both in the same season.
The Lincoln event featured 41 teams from all over Southeastern Michigan.
The Dexter Dreadbots served as captain for the 3rd seeded alliance in Finals competition. Along with their alliance partners the Whiteford Bobcats (Team # 6570 from Ottawa Lake) and the Steiner Steel Storm (Team # 5067 from the Rudolf Steiner School, Ann Arbor), the Dreadbots fought past every higher ranked team in the quarterfinals and the semifinals, even setting high score for Finals play (91 points).
During the semifinals play, a particularly violent hit from an opposing robot tore off the Dreadbot’s rear bumper, causing match officials to disable (E-Stop) Dexter’s machine mid-match, in accordance with competition rules. Dexter’s alliance lost that match, but minutes later, fought back in the tie-breaker round with a hastily reinforced bumper to advance to the finals.
The Dreadbots’ final opponent was the surprisingly effective eighth-seeded alliance consisting of F.E.A.R. the Termigators (Team # 5853 from Arbor Prep, Ypsilanti), the Greenhills Lawnmowers and the Byting Irish (Team # 7660 from Fr. Gabriel Richard School, Ann Arbor).
The Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti alliance edged their neighbors to the west 83-81 in a dramatic and close match.
Dexter was the first-ranked team in the Districts, just one point ahead of Greenhills. Father Gabriel Richard was third ranked, Arbor Prep fourth and Rudolf Steiner 13th.
