The Dawn Farm Education series and Teens Using Drugs: What To Know and What To Do series provide helpful, hopeful, practical information covering a variety of topics related to substance use disorders and recovery. Anyone interested is invited to attend these free community education programs! There will be exciting programs coming in April, including two presentations by best-selling authors, as follows:
April 2, 2019 (part one) and April 9, 2019 (part two,) 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm: “Teens Using Drugs: What To Know and What To Do” is a free, ongoing, two-part education series presented by Dawn Farm Youth and Family Services for parents, teens, families and professionals. Part One provides information on understanding teen substance use and its effects, and recognizing signs that may indicate a young person is involved with alcohol/other drugs. Part Two includes separate sessions for adults to learn “what to do” to help when an adolescent substance use problem is suspected and for teens to explore their beliefs about and use of substances; adults and teens also hear a talk by a young person in recovery from a substance disorder.

April 16, 2019; 7:30pm-9:00pm: Intervention to Durable Recovery: The Power of Family. New York Times best-selling authors, educators and clinicians Debra Jay and Jeff Jay will provide practical, helpful, hopeful information about how to do an intervention and how to build a recovery team that unites the person with addiction and his/her family in working towards the common goal of sustained recovery. Jeff and Debra literally “wrote the books” on unique, effective intervention and family recovery techniques. Book sale/signing following the presentation.

April 23, 2019; 7:30pm-9:00pm. People Like Me: Mutual Aid and Recovery from Substance Use Disorders. People seeking support for recovery from substance use disorders can find a sense of belonging, understanding, acceptance and connection as well as practical help and support from an extensive menu of mutual aid groups. Dawn Farm staff member Todd Diana will provide an overview of mutual aid recovery programs, research supporting the efficacy of mutual aid participation, and include a panel discussion by members of a sampling of recovery mutual aid programs.

April 30, 2019; 7:30pm-9:00pm. Barking to the Choir: The Power of Radical Kinship. Father Gregory Boyle is the founder of Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles, the largest gang intervention, rehabilitation, and re-entry program in the world; and a New York Times best-selling author of two books. Father Boyle witnessed the devastating impact of gang violence on his community. In the face of law enforcement tactics and criminal justice policies of suppression and mass incarceration as the means to end gang violence, Father Boyle and parish and community members adopted what was a radical approach at the time: treat gang members as human beings. In this presentation, Gregory Boyle will share how compassion, kindness, and kinship are the tools to fight despair and decrease marginalization. Through his stories and parables, all will be reminded that no life is less valuable than another. Book sale/signing following the presentation.
