On Saturday, April 13, the Dexter Senior Center will host “Fly Me to the Moon” as its annual fundraiser at Columbus Hall in Dexter. The event will begin at 6 p.m., with a 6:30 gourmet dinner buffet of smoke brisket, chicken, salmon, salads, and sides prepared and served by Westside Barbeque. There will be a cash bar with craft beer and wines. At 8 p.m. the band will take the stage and the dance floor will open.
This year’s event brings Brad McNett and the All Star Swing Band together for the benefit of the Senior Center. Brad’s expert vocals will be supported by the professional stylings of George Bedard on guitar, Doug Horn on saxophone, Adam Mosley on piano, Pat Prouty on bass, Ingrid Racine on trumpet, and Pete Siers on drums. The music will grow from the big band sounds of the 1940’s to the Sinatra vocals of the 1960s.
By the year 2025, there will be nearly twice as many older adults as school age children residing in Washtenaw County. Keeping this growing senior population fit both physically and mentally is a challenge that needs to be addressed sooner rather than later. At the Dexter Senior Center, these challenges have become opportunities to engage seniors in a wide variety of activities focused on the health and well- being of mind and body.
In addition to administering the Meals on Wheels program 5 days per week, the center hosts a nutritious congregate lunch, daily fitness classes, yoga, reflexology, dulcimer and ukulele instruction, choir, acrylic painting, weaving, and a host of social activities and games. The 350-member Dexter Senior Center is a 501(C)3 non-profit which relies on a $20 a year membership fee, donations, grants, and funding from the Area Agency on Aging 1-B, Webster Township, Dexter Township, and the City of Dexter.
General admission tickets are $50 each; $75 for reserved seating, and are available at the Dexter Senior Center, 7720 Ann Arbor Street, Dexter, 48130, (734) 426-7737. All ages are welcome and there will be room on the dance floor for children, seniors, neighbors, and friends.
