Baseball: Big second inning leads Dexter over Huron

Nate Kniesteadt and Andy Durand each had two hits and Ben Cabana and David Kreske combined on a two-hitter as Dexter opened a doubleheader on Thursday with an impressive 12-0 victory in an SEC crossover game at Dexter.

Dexter improved to 3-0 overall and 3-0 against Ann Arbor teams – with two wins coming on Tuesday over Skyline.

The Dreadnaughts, who had nine hits in the game, broke things open with a seven-run second inning. Durand, Kreske (3 RBI in the game), Alex Mills and Nathaniel Fiegel drove in runs in the big inning. They added three in the third and two more in the fourth.

Huron had six errors in the early season game.

Dexter’s Evan Krolewski had a hit and two RBI and Austin Bockrath had a hit and two runs scored.

Cabana started and went three innings, racking up five strikeouts and allowing just two hits and a walk. Kreske pitched the final two innings with three strikeouts, one walk and no hits.

Richard Hurley and Jake Bernstein each had a hit for the River Rats.

Dexter plays at Jackson on Monday in a doubleheader.

The River Rats split a double-header on Tuesday with Lincoln. The River Rats dropped the opener 9-6 and defeated Lincoln 5-0 in the second game.

The Railsplitters scored eight runs in the third inning to break open the first game. Hayden Glover had a big game for Huron. He had three hits in four at-bats and drove in two runs and scored one. Davis Malmer had a hit and scored twice.

In the second game, Nate Hawley had a triple. Kade Cupp pitched three innings in the shortened game and had seven strikeouts and allowed just one hit and two walks.

Huron plays at Chelsea at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
