The State of Our Plate: Gathering Momentum in the Fight Against Hunger will examine the persistence of hunger in Washtenaw County and connect allies in response to food insecurity
As a celebration of its 30th year fighting hunger in Washtenaw County, Food Gatherers will host The State of Our Plate: Gathering Momentum in the Fight Against Hunger, a facilitated community-wide discussion of the intersections between hunger, health and policy. The event will take place April 24th, at the Washtenaw Community College Morris Lawrence Building.
Featured panelists at the event include Congresswoman Debbie Dingell, MDHHS Director Robert Gordon, and Alfreda Rooks, Director of Michigan Medicine Community Health Services. Senator Debbie Stabenow has also been invited.
“This is an opportunity to convene the hunger relief community and discuss paths forward,” Eileen Spring, Food Gatherers President and CEO, said. “Our goal is to raise awareness of food insecurity in our community, highlight our network of hunger relief providers, and connect with our allies who work in government and health.”
The event will bring together federal, state, and local government officials and agency staff; allied organizations and coalitions; community stakeholders and activists; hunger relief agencies; news media; and anyone who is concerned about persistent hunger in their community.
During a lunch program, attendees will learn about food insecurity in Washtenaw County, as well as systems change opportunities in hunger and health. They will also participate in breakout sessions covering topics such as college student hunger, race and hunger inequity, SNAP outreach and policy, and more.
