Dexter boys’ basketball coach Tim Cain said he was informed this week that he will no longer be the coach of the Dreadnaughts varsity team. Cain said he was told the reason for his dismissal was that he wasn’t “progressing at a level that they are looking for at a big time Class A school.”
Cain said he was informed of the decision by Dexter Superintendent Chris Timmis.
In his four seasons as head coach, Cain went 42-43 and 22-24 in the SEC White. Dexter finished 14-7 last season in 2017-18.
The Dreadnaughts struggled this past season after losing some key players. The roster featured five seniors but many of the top players were underclassmen and the team struggled to find consistency and lost some close games, including a heart-breaker to Chelsea.
Cain sent a statement to WeLoveDexter regarding the decision:
“An old Irish peasant saying states, ‘Remember that the darkest hour of all is the hour before day.’ Immediately after receiving news that Dexter Administration was looking to make a coaching change, an endless amount of support from players, parents, alumni, coaches, fans and friends came storming in.
“Anger, shock and frustration quickly turned into positive memories of the past and present. I am truly thankful to the Dexter community for supporting me during my seven years as your basketball coach. Coaching is all about relationships and I can honestly say that I will truly value all the relationships that have been built over time.
“As for my current players, you were taught to deal with adversity the correct way. You need to trust each other, trust yourselves, allow yourselves to make mistakes and then learn from them. Trust the process! #Family #DreadStrong.”
