Yes, the Dexter-Chelsea rivalry certainly carries over to the diamond and both baseball teams on Monday had convincing wins to take home with them. Chelsea took the opener 8-1 before visiting Dexter answered with a solid 11-5 victory in the nightcap.
Chelsea turned eight hits, two Dexter errors and four walks into eight runs in the opening game. The Bulldogs scored two runs in each of the first two innings to grab a 4-0 lead. They added solo runs in the fourth and fifth and two more in the sixth.
Dexter’s run came in the fourth inning on an RBI by Kevin DeVoogd which drove home David Kreske. DeVoogd, Alex Mills, Nate Kniesteadt and Nathaniel Fiegel had hits for the Dreadnaughts.
Jacoby Haley allowed two earned runs on three hits while Reed Ladd gave up three runs in two innings of work.
The Dreadnaughts pounded out nine hits and got a solid pitching performance from Ben Cabana to earn the split. Cabana – let’s start there – worked six innings and gave up four earned runs on seven hits with no walks and three strikeouts.
The offense took care of the rest.
Andy Durand had a huge ballgame for the Dreads. The senior, batting in the two hole, went 4-for-4 including a double with three runs scored and two RBI. Alex Mills, in the leadoff spot, had two hits (including a double), two RBI and two runs scored giving Dexter solid production from the top of the order.
Kreske (two runs), Trevor Feeman and DeVoogd each had hits. Kniesteadt and Joe Horne each drew two walks in the ballgame. Dexter walked seven times and only struck out twice.
The two teams will meet again at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday for a single game at Dexter.
