Baseball: Huron battles back twice to sweep Pioneer in SEC Red DH

 

The Huron baseball team took a pair from rival Pioneer on Monday but both games were very competitive on a perfect day for baseball. The host River Rats defeated the Pioneers 5-4 in the first game and then won the nightcap 7-4.

In the opener, Pioneer led 2-0 after one inning. The River Rats scored a run in the bottom of the second but Pioneer answered with a run in the top of the third. Huron tied the game with two runs in the fourth and took a 5-3 lead with two runs in the second. Pioneer scored a run in the top of the seventh but couldn’t plate the tying run.

The Pioneers banged out 12 hits but committed four errors. Huron had seven hits and played error-free baseball.

Kade Cupp was the winning pitcher for the River Rats. He went six innings, allowing four runs on 11 hits and striking out five. Joe Wade threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.

Daniel Olson took the loss for Pioneer. He allowed four hits and two runs over four innings, walking one. Ben Stidham started the game for Pioneer. He surrendered one run on one hit over one inning, walking zero

Cupp (one run) and Davis Malmer (double) each had two hits for Huron. William Downer had a hit, two RBI and a run scored. Richard Hurley had a hit and an RBI for Huron.

Noah Kotre had three hits, including a double, two RBI and a run scored for the visitors. Wyatt Raymond also had three hits including a double and a run scored. Hazen Westover went 2-for-4 with two runs scored from the top of the order for the Pioneers. Brendan Karsch had a hit and RBI. Donnie Thompson had a double and a walk for Pioneer.

The River Rats fell behind again in the second game. Pioneer led 3-0 before Huron scored a run in the third and two more in the fourth to tie the game. Pioneer took the lead again with a run in the fifth before the River Rats put up a five spot in the bottom of the inning.

Huron had 11 hits in the game to Pioneer’s nine.

Hurley was 3-for-3 with two RBI and a walk as the leadoff hitter in the Huron lineup. Cupp had two hits and an RBI and Downer had two hits with three RBI. Taha Ebrahim had a hit and two walks. Malmer had two walks and scored two runs.

Pioneer was led by Karsch who was 4-for-5 at the plate. Raymond had two hits with an RBI. Westhover had a hit, two walks and two runs scored for the Pioneers.

Joe Wade took the win for Huron. He lasted three innings, allowing four hits and one run while walking one.

Parker Gibb took the loss for Pioneer. He lasted two innings, allowing four hits and four runs.

The two teams meet again on Wednesday at Pioneer.
