Baseball: Huron splits SEC Red doubleheader with Monroe


Huron scored four runs in the first and added three more in the second to set the tone early in an impressive 12-7 win over visiting Monroe in the first of two games on Monday. The River Rats added two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth and finished with 13 hits in the game.

Monroe had a run in the second, two in the third, three in the fourth and one in the seventh. Both teams committed three errors.

Joe Wade got the win for Huron. He went six innings, allowing six runs on six hits and striking out one. Alex Cole threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.

Matthew Wyderko and Hayden Glover (double, three runs scored and an RBI) each had three hits for the River Rats. Alex Cole went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, two RBI and two walks as he reached base four times. Kade Cupp had two hits including a double and two RBI, Taha Ebrahim had two hits and an RBI and William Downer had a hit, walk and scored twice.

Monroe bounced back with a 9-2 win in the nightcap. The Trojans scored four runs in the third, two in the fifth, one in the sixth and two more in the seventh. They had 12 hits. Huron had nine hits and two errors.

Cole and Ebrahim each had two hits for the River Rats.

Kade Cupp (6.1 innings, 10 hits, seven earned runs and three strikeouts) took the loss.

The River Rats dropped a double-header to Plymouth on Saturday. After dropping the first game 21-0, the River Rats fell 9-4 in the second game.

In the nightcap, Cole had a double and Ebrahim had a triple. David Clark and Richard Hurley each drew two walks and scored a run. Joe Wade also had two walks.

Ian Barritt allowed nine hits and five earned runs with five strikeouts. Cole had two strikeouts in an innings work.
