Tennis: Dreadnaughts headed to state finals after strong showing at Regionals

The Dexter girls’ tennis team didn’t win a single flight during last week’s Division 2 Regional but the Dreadnaughts did send two singles players and three doubles teams to the finals and that helped send Dexter to the state finals on May 31-June 1 at Holland/Hope College.

The Dreadnaughts hosted the D-2 Regional (11) event on May 16 that featured Fenton, Flint Carman Ainsworth, Holly, Pinckney, South Lyon, South Lyon East and Walled Lake Western.

Holly netted the most impressive performance on the day, winning all but one of the flights, to earn a trip to the state finals. South Lyon East’s No. 1 singles player Summer McEvers, who was runner-up, was the only individual outside of Holly and Dexter to earn a trip to the finals.

Both Maggie Tucker and Lauren Filipiak were runner-ups for Dexter in singles. Tucker lost 6-0, 6-0 in the two singles final to Holly’s Makenzi Sells while Filipiak lost 6-0, 6-0 to Holly’s Call Sokoloski at three singles.

Dexter’s two doubles team of Sarah Penrose / Emma Hodder lost to Holly’s Ruby Barrett / April Tetlow 6-3, 6-0; Dexter’s three doubles team of Avery Goodrich / Ella Diab lost to Holly’s Maika Horarth / Jesse Hepner 6-0, 6-1; and Dexter’s four doubles team of Alina Birchmeier / Isabella Butka lost to Holly’s Lauren Lesch / Paige Weeder 6-2, 6-1.

Dexter’s Tara Lessnau played one singles and reached the semifinals before losing to South Lyon East 6-1, 6-0. At four singles, Dexter’s Kendall Rosevelt also reached the semifinals before losing a tough 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 decision to Pinckney. At one doubles, Dexter’s team of Sage Roberti / Janell Hubert lost a tough 6-4, 3-6, 6-6 (7-2) match to Fenton in the first round.
