Tennis Regionals: Dominant Pioneer and Huron heading to Division 1 State Finals

 

Pioneer and Huron headed to Regionals last week with each program looking to secure a spot in the upcoming State Finals. Game. Set. Match.

Both the Pioneers and River Rats netted spots in the finals after taking the top two spots in Region 3 tournament hosted by Pioneer. The Division 1 State Finals are May 31-June 1 at Greater Midland Tennis Center.

Plymouth also qualified out of the Pioneer Regional.

And it’s a return trip for the River Rats. Huron finished tied for fifth at last year’s state meet with 13 points. Pioneer finished tied for 16th place with two points.

At this year’s Regional, the Pioneers dominated the field. The purple and white served up seven flight champions and a runner-up. Huron had a flight champion and two runner-ups.

At one singles, Pioneer’s Kari Miller defeated Plymouth’s Jessica Braun 7-5, 6-1 in the finals. At two singles, Huron’s Miriam Gandham defeated Pioneer’s Mia Goldstein 6-4, 6-2. At three singles, Pioneer’s Meg Goldberg defeated Saline 6-0, 7-6. At four singles, Pioneer’s Ashley Capelli defeated Saline 6-1, 5-7, 6-3.

At one doubles, Pioneer’s Alex Beloglazova / Kate Beloglazova defeated Huron’s Jenna Peterson / Mihika Thakurta 6-1, 6-2.

At two doubles, Pioneer’s Nikita Abbaraju / Shruthi Chakravarthy defeated Huron’s Juan Oh / Cindy Liu 6-2, 6-3.

At three doubles, Pioneer’s team of Riley Dickinson / Gina Liu defeated Plymouth’s team of Paige Cristea / Grace Iacapelli 6-4, 6-0.

At four doubles, Pioneer’s team of s Mary Grobosky / Sara Negrin defeated Saline 6-0, 6-1.
